If you can only afford one gun as of now and want to use it for everything, get a 5.56 AR-15 with a 16" barrel and collapsible stock.

If youve only got money for one, you probably dont have $1000+ :p

Mine was $699, they are getting cheaper because so many people bought them around the election, now they see the Obama not wanting to have a new assault weapons ban, so people are selling them/demand went down.  Ammo and EBR's have been in decline over the past few months.

How much would it cost to make the frame?

Materials and man hours?

Material will probably be fifteen bucks. I'm going to do it out of 7075 or 7050. Stock will be 7.00" x 5.00" x 1.00" Its probably going to take a few hours of programming, tooling design and fixturing plus a few hours of run time on top of a few for setup. As far as tolerances go the tightest linear is +/- .001" and tightest diameter is +.0015/-.0000" so it isn't too bad. Just very detailed. There are a ton of operations.

Spending money on a gun that has no use to. Sounds like a bit of a fuck up to me.

you shouldnt need a CCW to carry whatever you want on your own property.  It depends on your state if you need a gun permit, you dont need any permit or anything here in ol Virginia, you just go to the gun store, get your name run through the system, and then you get your gun.

Get a 12 gauge for home protection.  Dont use a rifle man, that shit goes through walls, not what you want at all with roommates.  Plus, your first instinct should be to get him out of there, not snipe him.  The sound of a shotgun cocking will deter most robbers, they want nothing of that.  And you shouldnt blast someone for stealing either, only if you were being attacked or they were armed.  For a rifle, something like a 30-30 would be perfect for most game.  Varmint, a .223 like birdmang said or alot of people are even using these .17 varmint rifles. http://www.gunsandammomag.com/cs/Satellite/IMO_GA/Story_C/Ruger+K77%252F17+Varmint.

I was more or less kidding about killing someone if I heard them stealing, but I would like one for home protection.

I'll read up on what is needed here in good ol' Nevada.

You don't go into a Vegan Restaurant and try to order a steak.

You should get the point, but if you have a legitimate question I am always happy to inform the ignorant.

For Nevada laws do a quick google search.  You shouldn't need a permit to own a firearm in Nevada unless you want to carry concealed.  Read up to make sure.

http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/
http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/nevada.pdf

As for a good weapon....there's a huge range of choices.  For home defense, a handgun or a shotgun.

For a rifle...do you want a powerful centerfire rifle or a less powerful rimfire?

If you can only afford one gun as of now and want to use it for everything, get a 5.56 AR-15 with a 16" barrel and collapsible stock.

If you narrow down your search from the choices mentioned above I'll help you with the details.

I'd like to spend no more than $500 on my first weapon.

I see these billboards all the time while taking the I-15 into Vegas for this place that has guns, and a indoor shooting range. I really want to go there and test some out.

http://www.thegunstorelasvegas.com/ heres the link to that place.

Lets get the ball rolling.

I still don't know what i'd want more. I'm not really a fan of hunting, unless I'm going to eat what I kill. Our property borders like a 30,000 acres Wild Life refuge (our property IS a bird refuge, but a private one with no hunting) and it allows hunting of birds and what not.

A hand gun, maybe. But some sort of semi-automatic, "zombie killing" type gun may be the most fun for me.

Not quite sure yet.

EDIT: While I was back home in Indiana, a friend's room mate showed me his Russian AK-47 that was pretty awesome looking. I've been kind of wanting a gun for awhile already, but then he made the interest larger.
