PBR, You should check out GlockTalk.  There's a ton of knowledgeable (as well as not so knowledgeable) people.  The only advice I can give on a G17 is to stick to a Gen3 for now. Some people are having issues with the new Gen4 G17's.

Glocktalk is a solid forum!

Im not set on 9mm as couch pointed out its based on what I can get. Can some one explain the calibers to me? I know glocks come in about 7 different calibers.

I would honestly suggest making an account on GlockTalk.  GlockTalk - Caliber Corner is a perfect place for that.  Not that you'll get bad answers on here but there's people on there that eat, sleep and breathe this stuff.

Is it going to be primarily a range gun or will it pull home defense duty as well?

PBR: First you need to decide on what you want:

-Revolver, Pistol, Polymer Pistol etc

-Then you decide on caliber...some glock calibers are glock specific.  They are awesome calibers but they are hard to find and expensive.

-9mm is right for me because I get boxes of 50 for $9.99 from walmart, thats cheaper than most anyone on here will find ammo.

-9mm is easy to shoot and also easy to hand load.

-I can successfully double tap on a body sized mass and get great groups with 9mm, from about 15 yards.

In the end its your choice, but I will sway you towards 9mm because its my favorite for practicality, reliability and defense.

I got two boxes of Federal 9mm for $9.47 at WalMart last night. I'm almost thinking I should have gone with .40 though since they always have a lot more of it.
