Some of the parts above are contained together in "kits", like a lower receiver kit will have everything to build a bare lower.

Honestly though, if you are just learning about AR's I'd buy a complete upper receiver and a complete lower receiver. You get pretty much the exact rifle you want, for a slightly cheaper price.

After buying an 11" Troy TRX Extreme on Black Friday and disassembling my rifle, I found I have a 16" HBAR. After much deliberation, I decided to machine the barrel down myself to a mid-weight barrel. I'm satisfied with the results

Modifications also include chopping off the front sight block.

I know I don't have a front sight yet but I ordered a Troy folding one and it'll be here on Wednesday, along with a QD sling mount for the new hand guard.

A lower is a lower. 80% of them are made in the same place, you're just paying for the rollmark.

That being said I've never heard bad things about Spike's lowers.

pretty much what i thought. i know little about ar's but i really want to start building one.

They are great guns to build. You need some special tools to build the upper (barrel wrench/upper vice block), so I recommend getting a complete upper receiver, a bare lower receiver and a Lower Parts Kit / Stock. One hour build at most.

anyone have any suggestions for a pistol?
I'm thinking a .40 or 9mm, debating on whether or not getting a gun small enough to conceal/debating how much I want to spend on ammo.
I was really looking into s&w .40 cal, saw they were in the mid 400 dollar range.
anything else i should research? i have been reading everything about every make of pistol I see, are there any to stay away from? any cheaper makes that are worth checking out?
I have a lot of friends with lots of gun knowledge, but I figured I would see what you guys might suggest.

I recently bough a rock island armory 1911 in .45 and i have had no problems and have heard no other complaints about them. they are pretty cheap... especially for a 1911.

i really like the m&p series i keep going back an forth on getting rid of my steyr for one. i really like my steyr but it has goofy sights on it and every time i shoot any other handgun i have to re learn them.
