shadow freecoaster axle
« on: February 17, 2015, 09:45:21 AM »
I want to run my St.Martin AJ frame, that has 3/8ths drop outs. My shadow wheel is 14mm. I see Federal and primo have female axles that use 3/8ths bolts. I know they have a 14mm lip that goes into the drop out and I know that little lip can be cut off to work with my frame.

The question now is, can the federal or primo axle fit in my shadow hub? Both say KHE style, but looking at pictures online shows the axles look slightly different. And like you, I'd hate to buy something then find out it isn't compatible. Thanks!

original shadow axle, from dans comp

federal female axle from google:

Is modding your dropout out of the question? That was what I did back in the day, saves you some headache (or create bigger headaches, depending on how well you do).

He is so good that he probably doesnt have a serial number on his frame, just a cheat code...

it's not, but the drop out is pretty small. if I were to cut it I'd have the local bike shop do it.

The Federal one won't fit the Shadow hub - the bearing arrangement is different, the Shadow one uses a needle bearing and a driver bearing (though could be 2 driver bearings - don't really remember now) and the Federal one is 2x driver bearings and a nylon bushing. That's why the axles have different length bearing surfaces. Haven't taken a Primo apart so I couldn't comment on that one.

or run one of the 14mm frames you have instead of that weird flat frame. hang it on the wall to remind you that your missus bought you it, rather than hack it to bits.
this year i am going to have sex and it will be awesome

File the dropouts, it's not as bad as you think it is.

As long as you go nice and slow, measure every step of the way, you're fine.

From the top of the dropout to the bottom, you'll measure 10mm. File the lower part of the dropout until you hit 12mm. Flip it over, repeat on the top until you hit 14mm. Bingo.

local bike shop filed the drop outs really nice. Ben, I like this weird flat frame. I rode it almost a year, rode the deco for a month, going back to weird frame. Deco is getting built straight cable 2 pegs front brake.

anyway this thread can be closed now :)
