Sasha:
All of that stuff under £550 is probably asking a lot. Specialized do a 650b Pitch this year in a few different models that might suit ya. Remote lockout is a bit of an unnecessary gimmick, try and avoid. I would try avoid cheap SRAM/Avid stuff too if possible, Shimano just works better on the low end..

This ticks all the boxes:

We've only got 17" left in stock, ignore how the site looks...ha!

--- Quote from: Liam on March 17, 2015, 12:33:00 PM ---I'm debating getting a hardtail and I have almost no idea what I'm looking at. I'm mainly going to be using it for getting to work and dicking about on the South Downs. Here are my vague requirements:

 - 26" or 650b (29" is just too big for my liking)
 - 17/18" frame
 - Not an absolute tank
 - Not shitty forks
 - Solid feeling cranks
 - Durable drivetrain
 - Reasonable brakes (disc) that need minimal maintenance
 - Under about £550
 - Would prefer to buy new, not second hand

Find me a bike, BG.

P.S. Does remote lockout on forks actually work properly? It would come in handy if it does. Mechanical or hydraulic discs? What brands/components should I definitely avoid?

The Gensis Core 10 is right on your budget, looks pretty good.

Scunny:
I want to buy so much shit. New force 22 groupset, MTB wheels, Devilles and Transition Patrol. I'm gonna be so skint this summer.

Kinchy:
Man, me too. I'd be well up for Force 22 Hydro if I had some cash, plus Giro Empires too. And new wheels. And shit loads of lycra. And a Garmin 810.
