stock stem woes
« on: May 30, 2015, 08:44:05 PM »
Do stock stems suck?
I have this unridden mirraco and its already slipped on me twice. Anything I can do to make it work?
I know there's paint on the stem knurling and I'm thinking of sanding it down, I just wanna double check that's not a bad idea

2010 mirraco edit, it is heavy :(

as long as you don't sand the knurling down too much, it is a good idea to remove the paint on the inside of the stem for sure. When I first started riding this helped me loads with my stem slipping

Just clean the crap off the stem (I assume it isn't really painted on the clamp area?) but clean as much as the paint as you can out of the knurling on the bars. Use stripper rather than abrasives if you can, or failing that scrape the grooves with a blade.

I have a Sunday Pro complete and the painted Freeze stem it came with was all over the place the first two times I took that bike out. I took it apart and it was full of paint dust, cleaned it up, reassembled and it hasn't moved since.
