If you get a chance, definitely post some footage from your HV30.

I finished my dolly.

-
I have some skate footage from it right now, but not much bike stuff yet. I could upload and post the skate clips if you want to see that.
-
what are you waiting for?
you reckon you'll use it alot?
-
Haha, alright give me a minute and I'll post a couple clips. I think I'll use it a fair amount.
-
Heres three clips (http://s9.video.blip.tv/1340003731702/JSoule-DollyFootage211.mov) with the dolly. There will be more clips in the new web edit I'm working on, as well some in the bmxperception web edit.
-
Awsome dolly, looks like ou did a good job on it, around how much did the nessecery building materials cost?
-
Thanks. I think it would be about $200 worth of materials if you include the manfrotto tripod head, but I already had that. Other then that, the tracks and the base are all aluminum, so they weren't to expensive. Then there are the rubber caster wheels which were about $9 each.
-
Canon XH A1 and the Sony VX2100: Dialled.
And that dolly looks sick
-
I said I would post more dolly footage and I completely forgot, so here's a new clip.

hey jsoule i read that that camera cant focus while zooming, true? cause that camera is pretty sweet, besides that possible issue.
-
You can't focus and zoom at the same time using the rings, but you can get around it by using the position preset switch, which will focus/zoom to any point you set.

There is, the reason I asked is it has the two pronged lens shades like my one. You must have a different 72mm version.

my shades broke off the second time i ever put it on. Being around various contests and such, I've met a handful of others with the same story. Must have been a bad run or something. Lens still works fine, just lame that i can't use the lens cap anymore, gotta rap it in that bandana...
-
Ah I see. At least it was the lens shades breaking and not the glass.

That spot is crazy, you're in Ontario? How far from Niagara?
-
It's Trent University. It's a few hours drive from Niagara.

I finished my dolly.
do you think your dolly would be smoother if the head was mounted directly on the platform?
seems like if its just coming out of the center on one pool it might sway?
i dono, creative design though

Nope, the aluminum I used is really thick and rigid. There is virtually no shaking from the post.

i love the dolly, the clip looks much smoother.

That could be interesting. The only problem I could see is that the wheels would have to be perfectly straight, with the grooves in exactly in the same spots on each wheel, or the edges of the wheel could rub on one side.
That was one of the things I had to work on to dial in with my dolly. Just getting the wheels exactly straight so they didn't rub on the track.
-
bored waiting for a meeting so here you go -
edit - oops, this is actually the first pic, was supposed top be the last. i wish i had this much space at my flat... this is a suite i freelance at. nothing too special - g5 quad, dual 20"s, blackmagic sdi bridge and mac mini for admin crap. the audio monitors are xlr connected, i forget the make.. it's linked to a snell wilcox/editshare/multi-cart ingest and server set up in mcr (machine room). this suit has fcs2 with photoshop middle east as i do captions and some graphics for bbc arabic.
camera is a sony pdx10 dvcam. technicly better than mini-dv, but as the ccd's are pretty small the video quality isn't that great. it's a mini version of the pd150.
i've got two lens's, one cenny 37 (some call it the baby death) and a sony 45. i try to use dvcam stock, even though you can use mini dv, which runs at a faster speed so it's less compressed. it's all lovingly stored in a lowepro mini trekker. i also have the t-1 handle.
home edit set up is pretty basic. lacie drives and edirol monitors under the desk. normally i use a macbookpro with fcs2. this is an old g4 as the macbook is being repaired. external 20" monitor, keyboard and mighty mouse.
-
that computer setup is sick as fcuk.
you know you can buy a mike that has the handle istead of using the ghetto one, right??
-
you know you can buy a mike that has the handle istead of using the ghetto one, right??
what do you mean? an xlr mic that attaches to the camera and has a handle attached?
-
i dunno my mate had a mic on his jvc and it had a bit that looked like a handle (behind the mic it was quite big) so i just thought thats what it was for.
-

yeah i think if i would have spent more time properly alligning my wheel holes mine would have been much smoother
im thinking of making a new one with a better design that i drew up and selling my old one or something..

Do film with the mic on when using the death? It looks like it would show up in the shot.
-
I doubt it would seeing that's just the internal mic, with a windscreen on top of it. A couple cm of foam is not going to get into the shot.
Edit: Keep in mind it's also shooting 16:9 which does not show the entire fisheye lens. With my A1 and death lens, I only have to slide my shotgun mic back slightly to get it out of the shot.
-
Where in the DC burbs do you live, switchblade?
-
to answer the first question: the windscreen doesn't get in the shot at all, and it helps out considerably when filming in windy conditions (in actuality, it's a microphone cover!) I live in Centreville and work at A-1 cycling in Manassas. I moved to the area in January from just north of Philly, so I was local there. now i film for Manassas locals. As for the name Switchblade, My boss at the shop started calling me that my first week there, and it stuck. oh well, i've had worse nicknames!
-
(in actuality, it's a microphone cover!)
Which is called a windscreen in the professional film/audio world.

haha, yeah, i meant i bought a mic cover (for like on stage singing and such) and stretched it to fit over the internal mic. 'cause i got it for 2 bucks as apposed to $20-30, i though it was worth a try and it works out fine!

The shape of the glass does effect the lens. With the 16x9 fisheyes the concave piece of glass is the inner element, and the outer is flat. Most century lenses either have the outer element concave and the inner flat, or both.
The best part about the lens, is it's almost as wide as my old century lens, but it has absolutely no vignetting. I hate vig..... a lot....
-
ahh, right.
learn something new everyday, hate vig too, maybe I'll reconsider my options.

I can't tell from the picture, but do you have some sort of shoulder mount as well? Looks heavy as hell, haha. Unless it spends the majority of time on the tripod.
Looks killer though man, you can really see the quality in your videos.
Woah, I just saw your post now. My apologies for answering it almost a year late.
The HVX rig is gone now, I replaced it with a 60D. It was incredibly heavy, bulky, and annoying to shoot with, so it's not missed haha.
There was a shoulder pad for the rails, but the whole thing was so heavy, it did spent most of it's time on a tripod.
-
Pretty much just this at the minute. 7D, Tamron 17-50 lens, lcdvf and the usual accessories.

Not pictured is a Zoom h4n, Sennheiser wireless lavalier setup, lighting kit + reflector, DT100s, libec tripod and a shoulder mount which is yet to be used..

Directing a short I wrote in 3 weekends that if all comes together, we'll be shooting on the new Panasonic AF-100 with all Zeiss Compact Primes, really really excited. We'll see though, the cam may not come together as I planned. I have back-ups of course.
Followed by an 8 day shoot on the RED MX with Compact Primes again and the next 4 weekends after that are various projects all using an Arri SR2 shooting 16mm. Quite excited really, should be a crazy 2 months here with 6 shoots total.
Any DP's on Bikeguide?

Picked up a DVX100b from a buddy. Camera, Century death lens, bag, and all the needed accessories for 1k. 72 hours on the heads so not too bad.

I want to start filming and have about a 500 limit on a camera. What can you guys help me with? I want a handle, fisheye, wide angle, extra battery, and a bag. This is my first go around so I don't want to invest too much until I can understand that I need better equipment. Thanks.
-
Not knowing much about dedicated video cameras, but why not a GoPro Hero 2? You'll only get a fisheye (even though there are medium and tele "zooms" that still gives 1080p). No ugly vignette like most cheaper fisheyes for dedicated videocameras. If you want a display, get the LCD bacpac. You can make your own handle easily. Want decent sound? get an external mic for it.
I mean the Hero 2 is only 300 bucks. 80 bucks if you want a display. Soon there will be the wifi bacpac, that will let you view it straight on your smartphone. Get some extra batteries and build a handle. Spend the last of your money on cards and a shotgun mic.
Watch the BTS for Etnies Aimless. The videographer made a 360 camera out of GoPro cameras.

those dudes were filming skating with a RED camera.. pocket change. And yes i know that its rented.
-
Well yeah, the main camera was a RED ONE. But the panorama shots are from stitched GoPro footage, and looks great. I'd get a GoPro with a mic if I were to shoot skate. Real simple and easy to carry around as well.

I'd opt for a t2i body and a lens of your choice. Filming can't get any easier then with that thing.

Or cough up a little more and buy my DVX.

I'd like to shoot racing too. And I have heard that it is tough to film high speed action with a DSLR. Anyone care to comment?

just noticed these now. yes and yes. i'm even a bit reluctant about rewinding and replaying footage for people during a session. i don't know how many hours have been logged on my VX2K and although everything is working like a clock it's by far the best filming setup i've ever owned and i don't want to jeopardise it's lifespan.

I want this in my life.
