One of my two dogs. He's a lab, and his name is Trooper. He's awesome, and hilarious. Every time he takes a shit, he comes inside and bolts around the house. We have no idea how old he is, but we think he is like 2 years old or a bit older as we rescued him from he local pound. He's a super vocal dog, especially when it comes to doorbells, including ones on TV, ha.

This is my other dog, whose name is Buddy. He is a German Shepherd who we also rescued from the pound. We figure he is around 6 years old. We have had him for around 4-5 years now after my first dog had to get put down. This dog is one of the most tame, and laid back dogs I've met. The sad thing about him is that he has a ear infection that will not go away, no matter what we try. The vets have no idea what is wrong either, and we've been to around 3-4 different ones and all the same thing. It saddens me. Dogs are awesome pets.

this is winston. he is 15 years old, i think. Used ot be the tom on the street, lazy bastard now. seriously loud sometimes, but he's old so it's part of the deal i guess. loves chilling out with dad or me. doesn't like anyone else in the family much except my aunt who took care of him when he was sick. Man i love my cat. My friends all think he's awesome too. He's 15 so, i dunno how long he'll have left. Dad's talking about replacing him with a springer spaniel... I don't think he'd cope well without a pet.

Chicken. He's going to be 3 in May. Dude is cool but crazy as fuck. When we got him we thought he was a girl because we were told so (didn't bother checking I suppose). I think he still has issues from being called a girl for the first 3 months we had him. We have another cat but I don't take pictures of her because she's a bitch and peed on my fucking bed last week.

I found one of those out in the desert one day. I was whistling to myself jumping around on rocks or whatever and it would imitate the same whistle. I got super creeped out some lurker was going to pedo me. I finally saw the orange tail feathers and went and made friends.
Turns out he hopped about a mile through the desert as his wings were clipped. I found his sucky owner and regret returning him. Those guys are so awesome.e

this is my fish. I've had him since June. He lives in my cold dark basement and doesn't have a name, because pets with names die. In all honesty, I'm surprised he's still alive. He's pretty laid back and not to jumpy like most Beta fish, however he gets all excited when he watches me bang my girl. Haha.

i just got this little dude today! his name is 'beluga' for now. he looks exactly like my girlfriend's adult cat when he was little. my gf's adult cat is the chillest cat ever. and weighs 20 pounds on the dot. so beluga's got a lot to live up to. hopefully my gf's cat teaches him to become a chunky chiller.

black one is Miss skeeta, she is a little rescue kitty was around 4 weeks old when we got her 4 years back likes chasing cat toys, balls random bits of crap

sorry for the troll face pic.
he was wandering on the train tracks near the gate i worked at and i called him over. tried to give the owners or whoever a call but none of the numbers worked. so we posted it up on craigslist and had a few people contact us but didn't know shit about the dog so we have a new pet. definitely not the type of dog i'de pick but he's awesome and hard to find pets that are good with kids.

Leela, a Calico from a feral litter someone brought to the vet. She has gotten huge (she is 15 wks now, well over 5 lbs). Definitely lives up to her name, as she has horrible depth perception. She will try to jump from chair to chair or whatever and completely miss.

Fry, a little tiger we got for free on craigslist at about 5 weeks. He was covered with fleas, super skinny, and anemic. Fixed him up on a ton of milk and food and now he is getting huge too (he is about 8 wks old now). He also lives up to his name, as he may be mildly retarded.

My dog has clothes, mostly for pre work trips to the park. But I must say he really enjoys wearing his sweaters. He still does everything the same as if he were naked. Not nearly as big of a deal you seem to try and make it.

You know, it is funny you say all of this about dogs being sentient creatures, since you posted that bit about about not buying animals from pet shops a bit earlier. I honestly don't know why anyone that actually cares about dogs would say "DO NOT BUY A DOG FROM A PET STORE!"
Yeah, some pet shops get dogs from puppy mills. Puppy mills are bad. I think we all get that, and they should be shut down.
But for people to get all high and mighty about not supporting puppy farms by not buying a dog from a pet store, well. . . it is the dog that is losing. That dog in the pet store window has lived in shit hole it's whole life, been subject to neglect, etc., don't you think THAT dog deserves to go to a good home where it will be treated right? Nope, most people that actually give a shit about dogs will refuse to go in for it, because they think that somehow by ignoring that dog in the window, they have somehow stopped puppy farms from farming dogs.
So what happens? That animal instead will most likely go home with some utter asshole, who obviously doens't give a crap about dogs since he bought from a pet store. No one there will give a shit about that dog, and it will just suffer more, usually ending up a shelter, where then people that do care about dogs will adopt it. Why not cut out the middle man, yeah?
You want to do something to help? Then don't say shit like "Don't buy from pet stores!" Actually fucking do something about where those dogs come from and don't just be a lazy douchebag and refuse to take home a dog from a pet store that is just as deserving as a dog from a shelter. Fight puppy farms, but don't take it out on the dogs. It isn't the dogs fault he was bred at a puppy mill. Fuck.
I am not advocating buying a dog from a pet store vs a adopting a dog from a shelter or finding a breeder. It is just that people like you are really fucking irritating, going on about how dogs are awesome and need to be treated with respect, but refuse to give a shit about the dogs that are the most neglected.

I also agree that dogs should be bought from good breeders or rescued. There will always be people who don't know better to buy from a crappy pet store, but those in the know should either support good breeders who love their dogs or rescue a dog in need of a home.

he jumped in on his own and I simply snapped the photo and made him get out. He lives with a cat who likes to open cabinets and crawl inside so he does the same sometimes. No harm done.

Haha thanks, he hardly barks. He has a really playfull yelp he does when he's really excited, but he stops as soon as I say something. His true bark is only heard a few times, if I accedently step on his foot or if he's really mad. He plays with the cat all day and they run around like mad, they take lots of naps, sit at the window and look outside at birds.

Last week I purchased a group of three Phyllobates vittatus. The guy I bought them from threw in a fourth frog since they were a little smaller than he usually likes to ship them. They're about three months out of the water (morphing from a tadpole to a froglet). They're pretty cool little guys and are actually considered an endangered species as they are endemic to only a small swath of land in Costa Rica (these guys are captive bred, though). I've been feeding them springtails and D. melanogaster fruit flies. Right now they're in a couple of temporary 2.5 gallon tanks (two per tank) untill they get a little bigger. I'll try to get some better photos of them; they mainly hide out under the leaves and cork bark I have in there for them...

They aren't poisonous in captivity. Their poisons in the wild supposedly come from their diet; I think it's a certain type of beetle or ant they eat. Since their diets in captivity are different from those in the wild they don't ptoduce the harmful toxins. But, if you were to touch one in the wild the toxins would have to come in contact with with a cut, your eyes or your mouth like you suggested.

This is Hawkeye. He's the newest addition to the family. Was a stray we took in. Maine Coon, probably 6-10 months old. Weighs more than my 5 year old cat. He's gonna be huge.

Yeah I keep thinking it might be ok, as my dad will usually be at home on the weekends I'm working, but then last week I had 3x12hr shifts in a row and realised I'd be out the house for 14 hours at a time and I can't always rely on friends/family to go sort a dog out for me. Sucks as I could afford one and it'd be awesome to get a rescue dog.
I realize everyone can't do it but I work 3x12 each week and I have walkers come by and take him out to play. They charge me $12 a day so it's $36 a week. The amount of awesome my dog brings to my life is well worth that.

I've been heavily considering getting a dog. Current dog owners, what's the advantage/disadvantage spread on those things?
Pros:
-Companionship like no other animal. They will be your best friend forever.
-Fun. You can take them anywhere and they love it.
-Makes you appreciate little things. Hanging out in the back yard is fun since the dog is with you and wants to play.
-Raises your immune system (seriously)
-Makes you calmer and happier
-Women love cute dogs and will talk to you more
Cons:
-Cost: vet bills, high quality food, adoption fees or breeder costs, toys, training, the list goes on.
-Time: you can't leave them alone like a cat. Even an 8hr work day (+commute) is pushing it for most dogs to be left alone.
-Training: you get out what you put in. Every well behaved, trained dog is that way because of the 100s of hours that were put into them
-Dirty: if you're a clean freak, look the other way. Dogs run through mud, roll in dead things, get poop stuck to their ass, etc.

Yeah, I totally forgot about that... the fur is another huge thing. We have two long haired cats and two herding breed dogs with double coats so animal hair is a fact of life for us.

Having 5 dogs and 3 cats means there's hair everywhere. Even towels which is the foulest fucking thing ever. Don't ever let any animal on your bed. It's fucking bullshit when you get a mouthful of hair because you didn't realize your cat spent the day shaving on your pillow.

I am normally meticulously clean. Is it just an impossible task to keep up with? Or are you lot just more lax with your vacuuming?
You could get a dog like a poodle/labradoodle/goldendoodle that don't shed and are almost hypoallergenic.
But otherwise, you will either have to be chill about the fur or be cleaning your house every other day.

we got that a lot he was like 12 weeks old then and 15lbs hes almost 8 months old now and is 60lbs.... a lil on the big side for a jack

This is Gracie (american bull). We got her as a rescue 6 months ago. She's finally starting to put weight on. She was locked in a shed for most of her life (she's 2), and ate her shit to survive, we still have to watch her when we let her out and make sure she doesn't scoff it, but it seems like she's realising that theres food inside and she can leave the shit alone.
