Just out of curiosity, I want to see who is into making things.
Currently building a sandblast cabinet and an oven for powder coating, and would like to know if anyone else likes to make things. I know Couch could occupy a couple pages, but I would like to see if anyone has built furniture, sheds, house, or anything else from raw materials. Excluding cooking.

really shitty picture of a lean-to/shack structure thing i built last fall, spend so much time there this last summer, smoking, thinking, writing, reading, even spent a few nights in it. but now I live an hour away.

when I went to voc school I made some pretty cool stuff: female geisha axle, cool spacers, an awesome tool holder, "icicle" style xmas ornaments (I was so pumped on those)
I've also made some jewelry out of old computer hard drive parts as well as some stuff out of random minerals/rocks i've found
No pictures though :[

Thanks!
you just won this thread by the way.
Sweet! But, I'm sure there are others out there with some nice handmade stuff too.

i like your modesty

I sew a lot. I've made belt toolbags, U-lock holsters, iPod cases, and a bunch of other useful accessory-type stuff. Right now I'm perfecting a design for toe strap doublers.

Sell me a lock holster.

This thread has inspired me to start work on a little "U" shaped piece of plastic (or metal covered in leather?) that clips on to a backpack strap so you can shoulder carry your bike without the tt digging into your shoulder or moving all around and hurting like fuck
Finished results will be posted, if I finish it.

Sell me a lock holster.
$10 USD + shipping to Australia from Cincinnati, and I got you.
Plus a little bit of time to make sure the prototype I'm using holds up well.

Nice! I've made one of those before. I forgot where I saw the instructions at, was it Popular Science? I don't know.
Anyway, in relation to the thread, me and one other guy built this house (minus shingles and foundation), granted we were supplied with the materials and plans.

Sure, just let me know.
Hopefully I will get around to making an actual press this winter. One that adds concave along with camber (right now my boards just have camber).

I'm so glad about how this thread has turned. Bunsincunsin, you really show a lot of craftmanship in your work, which is becoming more and more rare. Keep up the rad work! I'm looking into brazing a new frame for the girlfriend here soon, so I'll through pictures when it's done!

As for building a house, congratulations man. That's definitely on my to do list.

I'll try to get my hands on a camera and post some pictures soon.

That longboard looks extremely nice built up.
I'm in the process of my apprenticeship as a Journeyman. Nothing spectacular, just some stab pins for a job, since my mother wanted to know what I was learning. Since shes curious like that.
These get hardened, Ground, then black oxidized. (Basically Gun Blue)

They end up coming out of bushings to check certain areas of parts to make sure they are to tolerance/size. Stab pins made from 0-1.

Hey, thanks a lot. I really appreciate the compliments. There will be more fun projects to come for sure.
For me, besides riding/using the things I've made, making things by hand is probably the most enjoyment I get out of anything. I have no clue what I want to do with my life or what type of career I would like. But, the more I hand-make things the more I lean towards a craft like woodworking or metalworking (handmade things specifically).

Keep me posted on this and be sure to document the progress! Have you made a frame before?

Im sorta in the same boat, but I don't really want to make my hobby into my career and get burned out on it.

I'm currently sorting out components for a radio controlled super class rock crawler. end project should be around 12" wide 24" long with 8.25" tall tires on beadlock rims. 4wd locked diff solid axles, 4 wheel steering and approx 70* on suspension articulation. all i have is a table full of parts, but pics will be up soon.

Here's something new. A handmade shift knob made from Orgeon Myrtlewood. I finished it a couple of weeks ago but I haven't had the chance to take any photos of it until now. There are a few blemishes in it but this was my first try and I think it turned out okay. I'll have to see how it holds up. Maybe there will be more to come (I have a bunch of hardwood blanks from my grandfather). I'm also thinking about making some hardwood spinning tops, just for fun.

Wide skis, use cranks, and if possible make the rear ski actuating also, you'll see why if you ever ride one.
Easiest/cheapest is to use an old snowboard and cut it up. Put most of your effort in the fork rake and the pivotal mechanisms, they mean the most difference. Im building a new rig hopefully before Christmas so ill throw up some pics as it happens. Good luck!
PM me if you need anything.

I have some ideas to make me new ones, where the knuckles are, I'll bend a 10mm tube like up and down from small finger to pointing finger , thread one end to take a "bowl", so I can use it to smoke weed. weld the edges , so no-one can see that theres a tube, just two holes.

It looks pretty cool and all, but I have no damn clue what it actually is... Even google didn't help me out.

the drawing we were supplied with said its part of a vapouriser refurbishment.
we dont do any of that part, our customer does.
i dont really have much of a clue other than that.
theres an off-set elliptical to square transition duct to go on the end of them but we havent got to making those yet,we have the drawings for them but i dont think the patterns are ready for them to be honest.

Made a new cigarette lighter plug for my car to match the shift knob I made last fall. I think it came out okay for just messing around. I also made a leather ipod "sock" a few months ago but I don't have any photos of it...

The village sand does suck but it aint doing too bad, they got some new lines and its better then not riding trails, haha. I usually goto catty in PA but havnt been able to make it up there yet this year. I havnt ever been to manassas to ride, its about hour or more from me, I wouldnt mind checking it out if there was someone to show me some spots. I know chad lives down that way right?

Haha, yeah chad lives about 5 minutes from me. Throwing a backyard bbq 2nd weekend of July if you want to come out and meet the whole scene down here, probably be the best way to get acquainted with everyone.

I finally got around to using the press I made over spring break. This the fourth longboard I've made and the first from the new press. I didn't think the board was going to turn out so well because I just kind of threw the press together and didn't really take care to making sure things were exact. But, It looks pretty good. I built the press to give me 3/8" of concave and 3/8" of camber.
Specs:
Four sheets of 1/8" Baltic Birch
Length: 40"
Width: 9"
Wheelbase: 31"
Concave: 3/8"
Camber: 3/8"

Thanks.
It's a ribbed press made from some left-over plywood, 2x10s and some scrap angle-steel and threaded rod. I'll try to get some photos of it soon. I haven't tried vacuum-bagging but I've heard it's a good way to go.

"symbolic urn" for my grandpa (scattered his actual ashes). made it to match the one that my grandma's ashes came back in. for some reason his came in a plastic urn.

I guess this kind of counts. I suppose I could post this in automotive hottness but whatever. I finally got around to painting the doors on my 1951 Chevrolet pickup this weekend (that leaves the bed, hood and some smaller parts that need painting). The color is actually a candy base coat that is supposed to be covered with a candy of some sort, but I just spray clear over it. It takes on some very different colors/shades depending on the lighting.

Wow, very vivid - looks like it went on smoothly!
-
Vacuum bags are great for prototyping, but a proper 2 sided press is better if you actually want to make something functional imo.
I have also made a bunch of mockups with a single sided press and a very strong fabric that you "pull" over the veneers. Compared to the vacuum bag I've used, the fabric method actually provides more pressure and is easier to control (not to mention much cheaper).
-
damm, i've seen some pretty cool stuff in this tread!

I made a rear rack out of 3/8" stainless steel tubing for my motorcycle this weekend. It didn't quite come out as I had planned as I didn't have the right tools to properly bend the tubing, but it's not too bad for a first try at rack making. I brazed it with 56% silver solder and brass filler rod.

Round stock is heavier than I would want, which is why I went with tubing.
The sand suggestion sounds like it would be worth a try; thanks!

Here's my new project.
It's a horn cap for the steering wheel of my '51. My first try at upholstery type stuff. The circles are 1/4" and 1/8" baltic birch plywood which I routed and glued together. I used contact cement to cover that with leather. It's drying right now and then I'll put some staples in the back. I'm also planning on adding a convexed (cap) piece of hardwood in the center but I don't have any lighter colored wood that would contrast the leather well...
Let me know what you think. I'll post more when I finish.

I just finished this. I've been wanting to make a knife from scratch for a while now and finally got everything I needed to make one. I ordered the blade from Knife Kits (http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/index.php) and used some ebony I had laying around for the handle. 3/16" brass pinstock was used for joining the handle to the blade. The side profile of the handle wasn't really what I was going for but I had a mishap with the router so I had to make do with it...I was thinking some sort of knurling/hatching on the raised part of the handle would look good. It's finished with linseed oil.

Actually it's the Drop Point Hunter (http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/product_info.php?cPath=2_392&products_id=2311). It was one of the cheaper blades they had and I liked the look of it so that's what I ended up getting.

Is anyone into vacuum bagging for presses/molds? I'm looking to make a vacuum bagging system for veneers and was wondering if anyone could point me to a good DIY setup? Do most people just run a venturi valve off of a compressor or something?
-
no its not bagged yet just lowered on the stock straight axle. customer is still deciding what he wants to do with it

It really depends on your application, because if you're doing veneers, most likely you're doing it for strength. Strength wise you can't beat a good clamping set up. Vacuum bagging for something like is unnecessary and a waste of time. Only real use of vacuum bagging should be for fiber based layups where air bubbles need to be removed at the most minute scale.

With the projects I have in mind strength isn't a real concern; although, I know vacuum bags can put down some decent PSI (lots of people use them for laminating skateboards/longboards for example). I need the versatility that vaccum bagging offers. I'll mainly be doing some finish work and some light lamination with the setup.

The guys who do use vacuum bagging either have a lot of money invested in the setups, or a superb vacuum pump on hand. If you're doing light laminations then go for it, but keep in mind you're maxed out pressure would be 14.7 PSI at sea level, but yes, you can't really beat the versatility of a bag set up. A good place for vacuum pumps are AC shops that have been around for a long time, I got mine for free since my family has had the same AC guy for almost 20 years, and we recently hooked him up with a $10k job.
EDIT: Sorry, when you said veneers, I read laminations. But I would have said the same thing regardless. Try it out with cheap bags first as well, then once you get the hang of it, move on to the nicer bags.
-
True, I'll have to look around and see what others have done. I think I've also heard of people using parts from old refrigerators as well... I agree, though, that a good clamp or solid wood press is the way to go for strength; I've got a ribbed press buillt up for my longboards that works great.
Do you have any photos of your vaccum bag setup?

I don't really have much, I've been tinkering around with it here and there, but learning to weld, working, and going to school have held me back from this. I've made some vacuum formed PC molds for carbon fiber layups, but haven't made it to the vacuum bag stage, or ordering the actual glassing components for that matter. My setup is going to be a little more elaborate than a normal bagging setup since glassing resin will destroy a vacuum pump way easier than wood glue.
Edit: I need to stop reading up on how to do everything, and actually do it.

Hell yeah! Lots of cool stuff on the page. Here's something I just finished making. Jack stand dollies. Same concept as regular wheel dollies only with these you can still freely move the vehicle while it's torn down. Made the bases out of 1 1/2"x1/8" angle iron and added two 12"x2"x1/8" "out-riggers" on each dolly for more stability. Welded 6 pivoting 2" metal casters to each as well for any discrepancies in the floor. Cost was around $120 for all of them.
If you plan on making some of these, I got the casters off of Amazon for $2 each which was the cheapest I could find them, otherwise everywhere had them for over $4 per caster.
Cut the 1 1/2" angle to 30" and cut out the bends every 7 1/2".

Bent it and welded everything else together gets you one of these!

those will work great until they hit that crack in the floor just right and your car ends up on the ground. its not fun getting a car off the ground that has no wheels ask me how i know:mad2:. the only way id trust them is if they were under a solid axle or some how solidly attached to the frame and welded to the dollies. i actually thought about making some but it sketched me out too much.

Quoted for truth, ratchet strap those bitches to whatever its sitting on so it cant slide off.
-
Those are also going to be a bitch to jack off of unless you chock them some how. Even then seems like they'd be tipsy.
-
Nintendo coffee table and Mustache coat rack...
This is sick.
-
Those are also going to be a bitch to jack off .
Cuz they're metal and dont have dicks?
-
Thanks for all the input guys! They are very sturdy, they feel no different than if it was just on jack stands. Obviously you roll it carefully, not go balls to the wall and hope for the best. I don't even have the smoothest garage floor but it rolled with ease to the other side of the garage. Even rolled it over that crack without even noticing. Loving them. They will also double as a regular wheel dolly.
Putting it up onto the jacks was actually less sketchy as the other jack didn't want to tip over as I jacked the opposite side up, it would just roll across the floor in unison with the jack. Then I jacked up the whole rear at the same time and plopped them into place. Not worried at all.

-
I don't know what that is, but from previous experience with your posts, I assume it's a gun. Well played.
-
That's really cool Jaaames. Are you studying fashion?
-
Why would you want detachable sleeves on a jacket? Either way, it looks nice, congrats man!
-
I like it!
Only thing I dislike is the pit vents. I like the fact that it has them, but I feel like the silver kills the look the rest of the jacket has going. I think if they were black, they'd be a lot less noticeable.
Not trying to diss, only offering some feedback.
-
Cheers, this is the second garment I have made- first was a shirt that went horribly wrong!
I'm a first year fashion student, which is kind of the reason for the detachable sleeves... at the moment we are still being taught the business of making clothes (pattern cutting/construction) and the sleeves are technically difficult to design/make. I agree to some extent about the vents- I don't mind that they're silver but there is too many of them and/or they are too big- I originally wanted to have 5 in an upside down pentagon, but that wasn't possible for reasons that I won't bore you with.
For this project we could make anything we wanted as long as it was in black fabric, most people saw it as they're chance to go completely mental, but I wanted to focus on technical details and the finish, as I feel there is no point in having a 'crazy' garment if it is finished like shit, more interesing shapes will be on their way soonish though ;)
-
I always took clothesmaking for granted until I watched my Mrs making stuff. Doing all the patterns and sewing and overlocking and all that stuff, complex shit.
-
this thread is rad. i like the jacket posted above, i really don't mind the vents at all.
-
Definitely my favorite thread on here.

This one has the same specs as longboard number four (http://www.bikeguide.org/forums/showpost.php?p=3440607&postcount=125) but it has a book matched walnut veneer base. Probably the nicest board I've made in terms of functionality and aesthetics. The finish took forever to get to a point where I was actually satisfied with it; I was about to throw this thing through the window because of all the orange peel I was getting... This particular board is for my cousin. I'll try to get some photos of it when it gets built up.

Quick question - where does one buy nice hardwood stock like this? I have a few projects in mind for when I move back to the states but have no idea where to buy material like this (that's not plywood).
Do you mean veneer or actual dimensioned hardwood? I buy from Crosscut Hardwoods (http://www.crosscuthardwoods.com/) because they're local, they have decent prices and a great selection. All of the veneer I've bought has come from Woodcraft (http://www.woodcraft.com/) as packs of about 12 sq. feet; they also carry dimensioned lumber. I'm sure there's some place similar to Crosscut Hardwoods in your area... Or, if you're looking for some really nice veneer check out Veneer Supplies (http://www.veneersupplies.com/).
If you're talking about 1/16" Canadian Maple veneer (which is what is most often used for skateboards) there are very few places that sell it and it tends to be fairly expensive. Roarockit (http://www.roarockit.com/uncut_veneer.php?cat=17&pg=3) is one place I know of...

you need a jig saw my friend

Actually, there may be one hiding in my dad's shop. Dont know if he has a metal cutting blade for it though.

you need a jig saw my friend
or a plasma cutter

Plasma cutter would give me a boner. I dont cut enough to justify it though.

theyre not all theyre cracked up to be you still have to use the grinder to clean up after. i use my band saw and jig saw way more than my plasma cutter cause i hate having the compressor running too. it does come in handy for some things though.

With proper settings and having the torch at the right height, there should be little slag on the back side of the cut. I use my plasma cutter for everything that involves cutting now.
-
if you plan on mig or tig welding the material it still needs to be cleaned up with the grinder. it has its place i just feel like the bandsaw is more convenient for most of the shit ive been doing lately.

That's cool man. I have a corner shelving unit/work bench type thing I made in welding class years ago rotting in my parents' garage. I wish I'd have treated it with a better clear coat as it's too rusted to be any good now.

This is cool- you should of pressed the seams though to make it look neater ;)
I have made buttons with from hammered pennies before- good stuff.

Have any of you guys made something out of an old bmx frame? I have a frame/parts sitting on the side of my house that I want to do something with.

Thanks man!

Thanks. Yeah, this was my first attempt at using a sowing machine so I didn't really know what I was doing. Care to explain what "pressing seams" involves?
Buttons from pennies is a good idea! I was just going to make one from some copper sheet that was laying around but I couldn't find it. Pennies are so worthless anyways, at least I put this one to good use...

Looking good! How's the bike coming along? Any shots of the whole thing?
Edit:
Never mind, I just saw the motorcycles thread...:)

i used my first freestyle frame, a bent and twisted chrome gt vertigo as reinforcement bar in some concrete that was poured to help support the foundation under my parents house. that being said, i'm sure you could come up with some kind of frankenstein bike or something fun.

-
what is holding the vertical suports to the wood?
At the moment, just friction (in the prototype the tolerances are very tight). But I've designed a clip that hooks onto the vertical supports and keeps them from falling out. It's hard to explain without a photo (which I don't have).

I just realized I haven't posted anything in this thread, ever. I feel so ashamed. I've built most of my furniture, but recently started exchanging it for stuff I can take apart since I'm moving soon, and nothing flat packs like ikea unfortunately. Did just pick up a sewing machine today though, and will be most likely reupholstering my car soon.
-

Cheers! It's pretty simple really. All you need is a laser printer, and something called Medium Gel (artist store). You print your image, mirrored, on a regular paper. Spread out a thin layer of Medium gel onto your surface/wood, and then put your printed image, face down, onto the wood. Use a brush or something to make it really stick to the surface, and avoid air bubbles.
Wait 24 hours. Take a glass of water, dip your fingers in there, and start rubbing the paper off the wood. The image will be left in the wood. Well, it's actually on a layer, on top of the wood, so don't rub too hard. Once you're finished, you can clear coat it if you want, with mod podge. Then all you have to do, it wait for the blisters to appear on your finger tips.
-
I'll have to give that a try. Thanks!
-
i have made
-bagels
-beer and cider
-spent grain flour
-indoor gardening setups

Is brewing beer difficult? Id love to make about 5 litres some time

brewing beer is mad easy, there are easy kit routes to make a ton of beer but adding dextrose and syrup just isn't my thing. http://vimeo.com/45908779 (http://vimeo.com/45908779)

Hugh, making beer is super simple.
Look into BIAB (Brew in a bag), check out homebrewtalk.com, search this site for the homebrewers thread, and feel free to ask questions.
I've been brewing beer for about 15 years.
and to be on topic, I made some french fries last night.....

I made a titanium rose for my girlfriend
I had to use different OD tubes and get them turned down to around 1mm , what a waste but what you gonna do :) there was no plate material under 3mm so I had to use tubes.
pics
tubes that are turned , and also you can see the "stem" , which is 5mm thick
(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c147/hendrikbmx/20121201_111945.jpg)
heres the first petal , I cut these with an angelgrinder and used a grinding/sanding disk to smooth the sharp edges. I used a vicepress and a hammer to either make a tube smaller or bigger until I got to the biggest tube.
here are the leaves , the stem for these is the 2mm thick TIG rod
I slowly "welded" over these with 12 amps to get the colors
(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c147/hendrikbmx/20121201_141444.jpg)
getting there

It took 7 hours for me to make and I am little sad , because I could have made it a bit nicer, but I didn't have enough time. she loves it though.
It was for her bday, so I said hey honey , wanna see some pics I took at work, shes like ahh do I have to? I said Yes , and I started with the tubes till I got to the rose and then I took it out and gave it to her. she loves it.
If anyone is planning to make one, use thinner titanium than 1mm.I tried to make the leaves like bent in the middle , but it was too thick to get it nice.
also, it was my first time welding titanium , I really love how easy it is to control the puddle, but it really needs to be purged all the way around to get a strong joint. I didnt use any backpurge ( afterflow was 10 seconds though ) and the back of the stem turned white and ugly rightaway.
-
That's pretty cool, Sasper; have you made stuff like this before? How much were the materials?
There was an art exhibit in the fine arts center at my school this fall with some really cool metal sculptures from a local artist. You can do some really cool stuff with metal!

I really haven't done much, but some years ago I made a stainless steel bong.
Where I work it is not allowed to make your own stuff, but I asked nicely and got a permission to do so.
the tubes cost me 40 euros , thats ~53 dollars, I did use most of it but not all.
I have all these ideas , but cant afford to buy my own Tig welder and such.
EDIT: compared to your skills I am like a monkey with a hammer.

Made this today.

just wrote a really long story but somehow I closed the tab FML
so heres another,
I made a titanium bracelet for my gf as a gift for valentines
tube I used was 70x4mm
had the lathe guy at work turn it down, till the outside was smooth, then he removed material from the inside till it was ~ 2mm thick, so the ID is around 65mm. its 25mm "high"
not the best job as there are some scratches on the outer side, but we build ships not jewelry.
anodizing titanium is really easy
all you need is some 9V batteries , clean water, baking soda and some copper wire and plastic bowl or something like that.
copper wire is like a lasso in the bottom of the solution and one end is connected to negative side , other wire is connected to the positive and the titanium piece
started with 8 batteries , dipped at a certain angle for 5 or so seconds , FIZZLY FIZZLY
removed 2 batteries, dipped at a certain angle and so on, till I used 2 , this gives a golden colour and a smaller V will not overanodize the rest.
pics
this is a test to see which colours appear with x voltage and so you can understand how I did it.

Woa. That looks real nice. Are you gonna have to make a slit or will it fit over her hand like this?

it should fit over her hand like this, because the one I took a measurement from was only 1mm bigger ID

What voltage did you use to get the gold and blue colors?
-
He started with 8 batteries (= 72 V), then went on to 6 (= 54 V), 4 (= 36 V) and then 2 (= 18 V). He claims 2 batteries, thus 18 Volt, did the gold. One of the other three (72, 54 or 36 Volts) should do the blue. The left over two should account for the purple and the other not very distinct color (light blueish?).
-
gold was the best with 2 x 9V . blue is the bluest with 4x 9V
there are charts in google, but mine wasn't according to it though, must be from different electrolytes, trial and error is the best way to be sure.
-
Thats pretty man. I bet you will have a good night nawmean

Beast.

I started working on this yesterday; still have to finish drilling it and cut the base off. I'm making a threaded aluminum insert for this one (the last one (http://www.bikeguide.org/forums/showpost.php?p=3368260&postcount=64) was chiseled out for a nut to be pressed in and didn't look too great) - just waiting on a tap and a drill to finish that off...

Last two pages are awesome. I especially like the idea of restoring antique household items like that straight razor, I wonder what other possibilities there are. Makes me want to go poke around some of the old historic buildings around here and see what I can find.
Love the shaving kit bag in brown leather and the chair, too.
-
That chair is awesome! I have been toying around with a very similar construction (two L profile plywood pieces mirrored) in my head every now and then, but couldn't think of a smart way to connect the legs/back rest. It looks like you figured out a very nice way of doing it! You should definately send it to Dezeen etc. With a little work it would definitely make a very good product

Nice chair DJS - do you have a portfolio online somewhere?
Here's a recent longboard I made. Inlay is pretty difficult; I'll probably just stick to bookmatched sheets from now on... My 'Modern Pintail' design with maple and walnut burl veneer:

Wow that is nice
-
cheers arttu! yeah i might send it on but at the moment there's a chance (probably extremely slim) that it might get put into production with a smallish uk commercial furniture company as part of their cafe range. so i'll will wait and see how that goes first. forgot to mention that 1 mould makes seat and backrest, the other the legs if anyone was wondering. the legs have a floating tenon running through them all which gives the chair strength. probably should of taken more detail shots of the spacers/fixings between legs and seat as well.
-
nice finish on that s.johnson, looks beautiful. i have a not so great free online portfolio online here- http://davidsearcy.weebly.com/

That inlay shouldn't have been hard. Use veneer for both colors. then glue that onto the main piece of wood.
Lot of nice stuff in this thread!

Made myself a gopro wire cam thingamy at work on the 3d printer when no one was looking, idea was i wanted something small enough to fit into a camelbak, light enough to use 1-2mm 'wire' and with some sort of speed limiter, without using friction on the line (makes a racket and gives a bumpy shot). Designed with the limitations of the printer in mind, so not the sexiest thing ever, but started off like this...
That middle wheel can be adjusted up and down, idea being that the more of an angle you bend the line (some parachord i found) through the slower it would go.
It changed a bit along the way, figured i could get the same result from the centre wheel by moving it left and right, as it would up and down, also the original camera attachment was fucking awful idea so i simplified that to use two ball/socket joints clamping together with a single captive bolt. Its about 250g all in.

First test flight, wasnt expecting it to go this fast... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laMjo1FC7OI
So the 3rd wheel bendy wire thing does work, it'll slow it by about 25%, but thats about it, you bend it further and it makes the trolley unstable, its not anywhere near enough of a braking force for what i need..
Anyone here got any ideas? I can make pretty much anything within reason, a cylindrical fan like a turbo trainer might do it, but it would have to be reasonably large, or geared up with some sort of pulley arrangement to increase its speed, maybe there's something simple i can do with magnets, rubber bands, etc....
-
^^ Maybe try bolting a simple (non rotating) bush in one of the spare holes to just rub gently against the line. Make it like an eccentric cam and you can just rotate it to vary the pressure.
:)
G.
-
Yeah that's probably the way of doing it, id wanted to stay away from creating friction on the line, thinking that wear might be an issue, it would be nice if the braking force was proportional to the speed too, so you get a smooth start/stop on it.
I've got a load of 608 bearings kicking around, so maybe i could do something like you suggested, but pinching the line between two bearing races, rather than static surfaces....
-
MEAT - where do you work and how did you learn to do what you do? on job training or schooling?
that this is cool!
-
Meat - you need some sort of fan then. This sort of blade probably makes sense
-
Was there supposed to be a picture or something there? I was mulling it over earlier and got the idea to do a fan something like a paddle steamer on the middle wheel, but with blades that you can flare like the prop on an aeroplane, so when the blades are set at 90deg sticking out relative to the alu chassis bit you get max resistance, as you angle them inwards the resistance decreases, until they're parallel with the chassis and not really doing anything, kind of like a classic windmill in a side wind.... no idea if any of that makes sense, even less idea if it'll actually work...
I work for an engineering and design consultancy, design stuff from scratch for other companies mostly and then oversee its manufacture. It has its ups and downs, the good days are brilliant, the bad days are fucking awful. Did an engineering degree, worked for a year or so then did an industrial design degree.

You aren't looking at a lot of drag, I very much doubt that you will see noticeable wear to the cord as it is moving past, you will see a small groove develop in the plastic but once the groove has worn you will have a fairly big surface and low loads with two very wear resistant materials. If the cord wears out after 1000 uses then I doubt it will be a big deal and your final item will be a lot smaller and easier to transport and adjust.
You will get a smooth start naturally anyway, and if your speed isnt too great and the line has a mellow-ish gradient and isnt too tight then it will create a dip in the line that will probably create some deceleration at the end too.
:)

Not really worth a doodle. I was just thinking of a cylinder (say 15-20mm diameter) with a (maybe 6mm) hole through it. Bolt it in to one of those spare holes between two of the pulleys and let the string drag against it slightly.
:)

Seems to work pretty well, only needs very slight contact with the wire to create a good braking force, so a bit tricky to modulate, probably need a larger dia brake thingy. Making an air brake too...

Its got a 4m working height (your head height fully extended), needs to fit through a regular door so about 680mm wide, maybe 1.2m long. It's basically there to replace step ladders, which are a health and safety nightmare nowadays, so they're getting sold to all sorts. So far a big supermarket here has taken them on for stock picking, several girly clothes chains have had custom ones for doing window displays, the shard in london has them for building services, microsoft bought a load for working on their european main server, etc, etc, i think theres a few hundred out there already.
This one you just push around, starting on a drive-able 6m one next year, thats going to be a bitch to keep from falling over, the testing required is ruthless.

They arent cheap I can tell you that. I averaged material out for 3 and it came out to like $32 dollars a piece. But I didnt have any scrap, or glue or the finishing stuff. Also stay away from poly, was not happy with its finish. Next one will be boiled linseed oil.
-
All depends on the look you're going for. Poly can be a bit of pain to get to look nice but it can look really nice with a bit of work. What'd you use to apply the poly? Did you sand it and apply multiple coats?

Still need to pick up some new towel bars and bath mats and paint the little cubby door. Removing all that wallpaper was such a pain!
-
Needs some new cabinets :P
-
Yeah, they're not my cup of tea either but it's not my house. At least they're solid wood, ha.
-
Dang, it looks so much better. Amazing what some paint can do.
-
that looks great Alex.
-
Alex,
Looks good. What the hell were our parents thinking with using wallpaper. I have taken plenty down my self, so terrible.
-
It was like that when they moved in.
-
I'd rather gut it then remove that wallpaper

Someone from work supposedly dislocated their knee cap. It's been about 5 days tops and they were back today walking around. Did you find it as bad as it supposedly is?
-
Damn, that sounds impressive. Like I said I did mine at Texas toast, which was October 20. And I've just began to walk without a cane just a few days ago. I still am along way from riding as walking is still pretty hard. Still swollen and still in pain, sucks.

It was the tenant taking photos. The landlord built the 'shed'.

Thanks guys!

Not enough to change them; anyone is only ever going to see one side at a time - you'd only notice it if you were looking at these photos. If I were going to sell them, then, yes, that's definitely something I would pay attention to. That's not the only thing "wrong" with them if you look closely…but my first pair of earrings are bound to be imperfect, just like everything else I've ever made...

anyone worked with carbon before?
just impulse purchased a bunch of carbon fibre cloth and tubing. gonna have a crack at building some small accessories for some of my bikes, and the big project which will be a pair of lightweight racks for my road bike so i can do some light touring this summer. haven't messed about with much anything in a while so I'm itching to get dirty.

If I remember correctly, it was the neighbor/renter that would document the landlord's work without him knowing.

I really probably shouldn't post these considering who and what they are for but I figure some of the heads on here can appreciate some fab work.

I've made a bunch of stuff lately, but I just finished one project I'm pretty happy about. I made some tools and with those tools, I made shoes. They don't look very good, but they are comfortable and most importantly, the construction seems solid. The next pair should be much better. I'll post a better picture of the finished shoes once I get my camera back.

Good work man.

I was going trough photos on my camera and found these ones of a table I made for my brother. He lives in the countryside in an old house (110 years old). Those types of houses traditionally have a big living room/kitchen, and in the middle of that space is a big, very sturdy table. I made a modern version of those old tables. Like with most of the furniture I make, it can be assembled and taken apart without any tools. The photo is from my parents house. The material is spruce from my dad's forest, half a mile from where I built it. I also made a bench with a similar construction, but I don't have photos of that.

I also made a table for myself some time ago. Again, flat-pack construction, no tools needed.

wow that table for your brother is really really nice.

hey Arttu, have you thought about making shoes and selling them on Etsy? you'd have QUITE a following. also, do you (or have you) made leather suspenders before? or Pelican belts? I'm in the market for custom-made, and I'd rather go to someone on BG than Etsy.
-
Nah, with the time it takes to make a pair, the price would be outrageous. Also I'd probably have to do at least 10-15 pairs before the quality of the shoes would be anywhere near good enough. There are a lot of actual aspiring shoemakers out there, I'm just a student who likes to make stuff himself. The same goes for other leather stuff. There's a guy here who is really good with leather, check a few pages back, he posted a leather backpack.
-
How much would you estimate to charge for a belt ^ and buckle?
-
I'd rock those shoes

Those kits worth it? Been after a semi acoustic telecaster kit for a while but dont fancy having to upgrade all of the hardware/pickups.
it was $200 AU plus probably about another 100 for the stain and tools. mines all stock, it sounds kind of twangy, i mean they are pretty cheap, but worth it for the satisfaction of having been able to make it. i should probably have started with something a bit easier but it should be good once its setup properly. i wanna make a tele deluxe but im thinking just buying a blank neck and a block of wood and going from there so i can pick the hardware

Bars, A stem, front hub, Backyard shed, tool chest, Polly tray for 91 courier ute, a straw hat, pegs, flat bars, backyard ramps with PVC copping, bed frame and some other stuff.
I just see it as if i make it I know how it works and what can go wrong with it than improve upon the design. Still think the bed frame was the best but I welded it up and had to cut it down when I moved hahaha

Going to be building a free standing bar/breakfast bar/bar top/whatever along the long wall of our dining room so we can still have a pool table set up in the center of the room.

Alex that's pretty sick, where did you get the fabric from? I am looking for something to recover my headliner wtih that is a bit different but still clean.

Thanks! It's is VW MKVI Jacky Plaid upholstery that I used on a few bits of my interior.
I got the material from JPM Coachworks. http://www.jpmcoachworks.com/jpm/
They have a few different fabrics available and also a Facebook coupon code for 25% off that I learned about after I made my order.

Just wrapped up my vinyl display. Just a couple 3/4" strips of wood sprayed black. Ran a saw down one side of each piece to create a groove for the albums to slide through. I really like how it turned out!

Can anyone recommend some sites that are like this thread?

I frequent Reddit's DIY section, which has tons of different types of projects and pictures that usually document the process.
Here's a link to the top posts of that subreddit, there's enough quality threads to read for days! http://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/top/?sort=top&t=all
Or if you just want to see finished projects, there's also a subreddit for that: http://www.reddit.com/r/somethingimade/top/

It's a 1951 Chevrolet 3100 Pick-Up - here's a link to the "Post your car/truck/motor vehicle" thread with a couple of recent photos: http://www.bikeguide.org/forum/index.php/topic,159893.msg3698897.html#msg3698897
Yeah, the motorcycle rack was one I did a few years ago; I've also posted a few other things on here (it's been a while, though).

Putting a Danish Oil Finish on the mantel I make. Alex you ever work with this stuff? Can I spray poly over it?
-
I would use wipe on poly over Danish Oil. Danish oil also already has some poly in it but you can still poly over it, just make sure you let it cure completely (several days depending on temperature) before you top coat it. I'd probably wipe it down with the oil, let it sit for a couple days, give it a second coat of oil, let sit several days again, then coat it a few times with wipe on poly, using 00000 steel wool between poly coats. The poly doesn't need multiple days to cure.

If people want them, I'm up to start taking orders for dickbutts. But I can only do plastic. I should see if that material flexes enough to wrap around a headtube...

you, and everyone, should use imgur. best image hosting site ever.
Image size seems fine for me but i have a pretty large monitor.
-
Only thing that sucks ass about imgur is that you can't resize the photo on the site directly. Have to do it in Photoshop and then upload it. Also, it rapes picture quality. Far from the best.
Minus.com is great for high quality hosting and ctrlv.in is great for convenience.

What am I looking at there? One pipe nested within a slightly larger pipe?
I suppose I could sandwich the whole thing between two boards with a bolt on either end to crank down on, right?

Yeah, basically a half pipe and inner pipe, pop it in a press or vice, should do the trick.

The badge might spring back a bit, so you may need to use an inner tube with an ID slightly larger than 1-1/8", may take a bit of experimenting.

all scrap materials aside from a couple screws, and pretty light aside from the 70lb piece of angle iron. took to alameda skatepark where some skater bitching at me about how its a skatepark already we don't need to be bringing anything else in her, wow seriously? I told him he's lame and needs to go watch cheese and crackers
I think i should add one more triangle by placing a 2x4 from the top center to bottom left
-
I think even a centre to centre strut would be as good, maybe better. top centre to bottom left would seem to rely more on the fasteners than the strength of the wood?
-
I needed space for a desk and my recording stuff so I took the doors off my closet and did some rearranging to make it all fit to make it into a little "office". Makes my room feel bigger now too, which is cool.

And a whole shot of the room for good measure. Still not on Joe P level but I got enough shit going on in here now that I don't really have to leave it unless I need to go to the bathroom, which is kinda cool.

This probably interests only the homebrewers here (if there are any anymore), but might aswell post it. It makes beer!
I finished my e-BIAB brew rig some time ago. 33l kettle, PID controlled heating element and SCR for boil control. Constant recirculation with pwm controlled pump. Diy false bottom.

Seeing your example I, as a biological process engineer, feel like I should follow suit and build some high-tech beer browing stuff

Yeah I'm thinking the same, been a strong beer fan and working as an engineer in chemistry, should probably set something up.

CNC cut this out of 1" Sintra with brushed aluminum laminate at work. Had the frame left over as a screw up (has a few scratches client noticed) from the previous person who had my job and I had to remake it, so I had the inside material left over. It'd probably cost me $200-300 in material for this and we'd charge a client out the ass. It's 39x39"

CNC laser cut this, about 2ft tall. Doing a small batch for sale if anyone's interested.
I need to make more shit in the future to cover my apartment with.
This summer I'd be interested in trading shit I make for shit other people make out of materials I don't work with. Need more cool things on the walls.

To get something made, is it really as simple as sending the maker a google sketchup and choosing the material?
I imagine not all 3D printers are capable of working with all materials but something like ABS Plastic or nylon is pretty standard isn't it?
I've also seen examples of 3D printers at the local Staples and all of it looks really rough and has burs. Is that something that I can sand out to make smoother or will it damage the integrity of the material?
I just want to make a little figurines.

It depends what machine they have and exactly what your model looks like. If you have someone willing to help you out, then they may be happy to accept a Sketchup file and convert it for you, but they wont be able to print directly from that. The file needs to be "sliced" into layers that the printer can then print.
Most home printers (like mine) are like a tiny glue-gun that lays down a bead of plastic in layers. Obviously those layers need something to print onto. For the first layer, you print onto the print bed, but from then on you are printing onto the model so you have a problem with overhangs and other unsupported layers. However, the software can add "support layers", little columns of material under unsupported areas to keep then where they should be, and you then snap these off. This actually works really well, but yes you will need to hand finish the surface if you want it smooth.
How smooth the part comes out will depend on the print resolution. If you want it super smooth then you can do very thin layers, but this then takes many many extra hours to print.

New sla printer, this thing blows my mind even more every time I use it. Cost just over 2k and I can't really see any difference between the output of this and the circa £1m machine the co I normally outsource prototyping to use.

Can I add neons for a cool orange glow while it is printing?

It's fucking awesome G, you'd shit your pants.
Came assembled and ready to go, the European distro is just up the road in Ripon. Yes materials are expensive, a ltr of goo costs about 90 quid and you need to replace the tray every 2-3 ltrs at about 40 quid, so it's about 3 times the cost of 1kg eBay filament rolls.
Quality of builds and materials are far beyond sls and objet, on par with all but the very highest res sla.
Build area is 125x125x165mm, which sounds a bit small but in reality I could never print anything like that on our fdm machine without it warping, which obviously isn't an issue with this. Also it seems to be really easy to split big bodies up and stick them together.
There are 5-6 materials including flexible.
It's about twice as fast as the old printer, at the same volume.
Cost was a big concern for me, figured it might mean running off protos would be more of a consideration and less disposable, but it's going to replace and improve 90% of the stuff we'd have sent off and paid through the nose for, the savings on that should offset the additional cost of the stuff I would've done on the old machine.
-
Sounds good, but expensive. I'm only paying about £20 a kg for PLA so this is five times the price, plus needing a couple of grand to throw into the initial buy.
Always wondered what happens with the support with these? It looks like there is some being used there but presumably there are in tension to lift the part off the surface of the goo? But then how do they snap off? Do you need less?
:)
G.
-
Yeah it generates a tree like structure under (well, over) the part, it narrows down to a 0.3mm neck where it meets the surface. You can snap it off pretty much in one lump, there are some little nipples left but they sand off easily.
Agree it doesn't make financial sense for most, but I spend a fortune on outsourced stuff and it's usually needed yesterday. I worked out it should have paid for itself in around 5mths.
-
Should throw a transfer case and axle on there and make it like a sportsmobile or quigly.

Been cracking away at my final university project, it's a 3D printer enabled bike shoe. There's a carbon fiber shank in there and the ffabric just stitches on, whole thing uses no adhesives to bond it. Tested this and it's not quite as stiff as a bike shoe, but walks pretty well. It was designed for bikepackers in mind, so that's cool. This was the first testable prototype from a improvized pattern, I'll sew some nicer stuff the next few weeks.
-
That's dope. So you reckon you could swap the bottom pieces out once they wore? That'd be a cool feature granted the rest of the shoe doesn't smell like dog shit at that point.
Is that a universal thing or just me? I don't normally have smelly feet but after like 2 years of wear and tear my shoes smell like straight up dog shit, no matter how much I clean them. If I wear a newer pair of shoes all day, no smellz. Old pair of shoes, dog shit. HALP.

Do you still have your rabbits?
I sold the one I restored. Still have my GTI.

Yea basically every part is replaceable. Even the fabric can be replaced separately of everything else. This is a really simple pattern to sew and sort of the secondary to my focus so far. So you could put on a thick one in the winter and thick in summer. You could also just chuck the fabric in the wash, no glues here.
Idea is that it's open source and anyone can access and modify patters as they would like. Do that for free, but could make business by selling fabric uppers, molded rubber parts, etc etc.

So I need some furniture for my new apartment since I don't really own any. It's a small studio so a lofted bed frame is almost necessary. Looking at existing furniture, nothing really seemed like it was what I wanted or wouldn't work so I took some measurements and modeled one up in Blender to get a rough idea of how it might look and get a better understanding of what materials I'll need. I'll also build a tall bar table for eating/games whatever off of it to help hide the radiator and keep things nice and tight. Here's the mock up, now it's time to build it!

Well, I finally got this built and the place is starting to feel more like a home than an empty cell. Still need to get the materials for the bar top but I'm broke and extra spending money comes along infrequently. Turning out better than I had hoped though!

looks cool man, dig how you utilize such a small place so efficiently. I'd go crazy in such a tiny home lol.

I've made a few pairs of boots and shoes over the past few years. Here's the most recent pair. Handwelted, only electric tool I used was a belt sander to shape the sole edges.

That is so cool. I would love to do something similar myself.
If I remember correctly you went to some kind of design-uni right? If one would want to just try and make shoes without any experience; how difficult would it be? Completely impossible or realistic with patience?

Figured I'd update what I was working on now since I finally put the last bits together. Now I just need to buy shit for the kitchen and bathroom... Ugh. At least I have a really cozy and cool place to hang or have some beers with friends.
Anyway, so I built the loft but still needed somewhere to eat besides the couch and coffee table or at my PC. Built this tall bar table off of the loft. Gotta say, I don't know how the fuck I managed to make something that actually looks cool from nothing. I guess that's what being obsessive does. I must've looked at my plans and possible materials for 6 months before I even purchased anything or built it. Glad it turned out, though!

Yeah, I studied design, but that really didn't contribute anything to shoemaking. I've just read a bunch in books and online and watched a lot of videos and tutorials. It's totally possible to make shoes without any formal training or experience, but the biggest problem is finding the tools and materials without spending a fortune. You need a bunch of different kinds of leathers, and you can't usually buy them in small quantities, so the costs add up real quick. I've bought (and made) the tools and materials over the years, trying to find good deals when I could, but I've still spent probably 1000-2000 euros on shoemaking. Now that I have the tools and expensive materials (like insole and sole leather), I can make probably about 20 pairs of shoes for little extra cost.
If only I had more time for shoemaking.
