For taller guys running short cranks gives you more clearance from the back pegs.

I feel it's mostly this. It sucks if you loop out and have your heel catch the peg with the back foot. Imagine in an ice pick on a rail... Vince Carter dunks all day!

Totally true.

In a sense one person is better at hard tricks, while the other is better at riding hard spots.

I very much agree with you on this. Also, the way edit are made are a bit different. I was having a convo with my buddy, and we came to the conclusion that skapegoat, skavenger, hood antics and etc have  a very good "vibe" to their videos. Rather, the park shredders usually have like dub step, or some epic music that can distract from the riding. Also, there are different type of park shredders, but i am specifically talking about the whip, flip and barspin machines.
