I've made a few pairs of boots and shoes over the past few years. Here's the most recent pair. Handwelted, only electric tool I used was a belt sander to shape the sole edges.

That is so cool. I would love to do something similar myself.

If I remember correctly you went to some kind of design-uni right? If one would want to just try and make shoes without any experience; how difficult would it be? Completely impossible or realistic with patience?

Yeah, I studied design, but that really didn't contribute anything to shoemaking. I've just read a bunch in books and online and watched a lot of videos and tutorials. It's totally possible to make shoes without any formal training or experience, but the biggest problem is finding the tools and materials without spending a fortune. You need a bunch of different kinds of leathers, and you can't usually buy them in small quantities, so the costs add up real quick. I've bought (and made) the tools and materials over the years, trying to find good deals when I could, but I've still spent probably 1000-2000 euros on shoemaking. Now that I have the tools and expensive materials (like insole and sole leather), I can make probably about 20 pairs of shoes for little extra cost.

If only I had more time for shoemaking.

The Lounge / Re: When's the last time you rode your bike?
« on: May 06, 2018, 05:02:55 AM »
About 3 years ago I guess. I've probably ridden (as in spending a few hours doing tricks) under 10 times in the last 5 years.

However, I just ordered a new rear wheel and a bunch of other parts and I'm actually really psyched to start riding again!

I'm having a beer with some old bmx buddies and we ventured to talking about bikeguide. I'm kinda glad it's still around.

Member since september 2003.

I remember my first thread about attatching a bashguard on a 39t Eastern sprocket.

I've been deep into black metal lately. Currently fascinated by Ulver's Nattens Madrigal.

I really like how it was edited. You know what camera they used for the majority of it by a chance? I really like the colors on it.

The last time I saw him, he was using a Canon DSLR with a Voigtländer lens. Can't remember the specific models.

A flatland dude I know just released his new street edit. Imo a really nice and refreshing bmx video. Another cool thing is that 2 of the guys on the edit are amazing flatland riders.

The Lounge / Re: So, lets talk about Garage Ramps!

I used to have small ramps above my parent's garage back in the day. It wasn't much, but it allowed me to ride trough the winter and was a blast. Unfortunately I don't have photos, but here's a video of me from 2006 that shows some of the ramps.

The Lounge / Re: Woodworking as a job
« on: October 19, 2015, 08:18:31 AM »
I have a BA in furniture design and I'm currently studying architecture, but my true passion is in designing and making furniture.

My plan at the moment is to finish my architecture degree and work as an architect. I'll also start buying used woodworking machinery whenever I find a good deal. My parents have a huge barn/garage thing, where I can set up a shop, rent free (at least for now). My dream is to one day have a decent debt free shop where I can make stuff part time, and maybe some day full time. It might take 10 or 20 years, but doing it slowly with the security of a steady income from architecture, it might be possible. And if I only end up doing it as a hobby, I'm okay with that.

I hate bb30 with a passion. We pretty much take all bb30s apart and grease them if a bike comes in for service. If we don't, it'll start creaking within a week and we get blamed.

Is it standard to sign a contract to work at a bike shop over there? I suppose the difference in shops is significant, still seems like a bit much for a bike shop.

Basically you have to have some kind of contract to do any work over here. It's a good thing as it's mostly to protect the employee.

I have a bachelors in furniture design, currently studying architecture and working in a bike shop (mechanic). Architecture is what I'll probably end up doing, but it'll take a few more years.

Good luck man, how many years of study do you have remaining?

I'm an architect.

I should get my bachelor's this year, and two more for a masters. So at least three. I actually would have gotten a job in a very prestigious firm this summer, but it was very last minute and I had already signed a contract in the bikeshop. I'm hoping to land a part time job this year, work experience seems to be much more important than school credits when it comes to finding a job after graduating.

I'm getting a bit too nostalgic here (few beers might have something to do with it). Does anyone remember runnah claiming he had robbed a store and shot someone? As I recall someone with the same name in his hometown did it and he just went with it.

I remember Philip posting a video of Arcade Fire when no one had heard of them and thinking he was so fucking cool.

Paulie once sent me a private message asking where to find hookers and blow in Helsinki. I had to explain him that I was 16,
lived in the countryside hundreds of km from Helsinki and that there basically are no hookers in Finland.

The photo forum used to freaking amazing as well. Like actually really good.

I once got a few letters on Charlie Crumlish in a b.i.k.e. game (when there was a whole forum dedicated to it). I remember doing an icepick stall on a quarter, where I sat down on the seat and did a crankflip.
