Running dual guards-Cult Dak/Federal V2
« on: April 01, 2015, 09:13:46 PM »
So I recently made the switch to Cult Deathrow v2?(dak green) and I'm running a Federal v2 hub. I ran dual hub guards (Animal PYN and Primo DSG) on my old fly frame with no issues whatsoever. But I can only run the non-drive guard on this frame, and its a decently tight squeeze already. So I've been on 2 or 3 pegs recently but miss my 4peggery haha

Anyone ride a similar setup with dual guards or know anyone who has? I bought a plastic Primo DSG hoping it would have a little more give over the alloy, but no go. Been riding the Animal guard since it came out so I'd prefer replacing my non-drive side. I was looking at the Federal and BSD guards that replace existing hardware (like my current Animal guard) hoping they'd be a bit slimmer?

I don't really dig the look of glands but i have some of those kicking around. Or even the looks of the new external DSG's coming out

I'm sure this isn't the first thread of its kind, but after hearing more issues with spec/tolerances I was wondering...

Thanks! Any advice or suggestions as to what could fit would be cool

I found the chromo dsg like the S&M or daily grinds where a fair bit thinner than any of the alloy/plastic dsg's.

For me, I took the locknut off the non-drive side of my hub and just put the guard on. The frame holds everything together so that locknut isn't really missed. I've been running my KHE ACB with no locknut for about 2 years.

Other option is to put your dropouts over the outside of a bench vice and slowly open the vice. This will widen the rear a bit. Do it in small amounts ie flex it out and then loosen again before flexing it out a bit further etc.

Worked for me.

Try one of the new glands if they're out yet?

Kink or S&M dsgs are thinner and better in pretty much every conceivable way. The Kink especially, as there is no mucking about with guard and chain akwardness, it just slides right in.

Yeah I kinda figured that might be my best option. The S&M is nice but kinda $$ and I always liked the Daily Grind's. Also cool to support a smaller company/Ryan Howard. Hmmm

That is an option but I'm kinda sketched to stretch out a new frame. Also when I have to remove my wheel with flats etc, I'm assuming it'll still be kinda tough to remove. As for removing the locknut, that doesn't sound bad but I also already have a little play in my coaster :/

I prefer traditional-style guards, but those do look quite nice over the old ones. Or even the merrit ones dropping

Ooh I forgot about the Kink one. Always thought they looked kinda thicker than S&M/DG, but I do like the ease of how it just slides in. Always hated trying to install/remove bent up alloy Primo ones

Thanks for the replies guys. Kind of feeling the Kink or the DG dsg now... Not sure which would be a better option

This. Solves all your problems

I am actually psyched for these. No, I won't be riding one, but I finally have something to sell to kids with perpetually pinched shut dropouts.

Haha yeah I figured someone would bring that up. I'd still prefer the standard behind-the-drop guard but they look nice for what they are. Would like to see how they hold up once they're out

New GLAND 4's should be out now and there is a front and rear version. Rear version is much thicker to fill the gap between spokes and dropout more. "front" version can also be used on the rear with some hubs if you want.

Or you could use a new front hub that uses the pressed on bits instead of traditional cone nuts.
like the simian hub, the hubguards are designed to replace those bits on either side.
